Support for Nest Secure Ending (support.google.com)

General Motors’ teaming up with Google is going to backfire in a couple of years when Google gets bored of that market.

You won’t be able to sell a used car that comes with a non-working entertainment system. Maybe there’s a play in there to make an aftermarket system that will still function.

I'm thinking of holding off on purchasing any more Google hardware from now on.

The volume of the ongoing stream of e-waste doesn't feel good. I just threw away 4 Chromecast Ultras a few weeks ago because they are slow as hell these days, totally useless to me.

As a counterpoint, our even older Chromecast Audio devices keep on trucking just fine.

What is slow about them? I've never had issues with my ultra and frequently stream 4K HDR content. I have not found a good reason to upgrade to Google TV and prefer the cast-only behavior. I do have it connected to Ethernet though. Also, some services' casting implementations are less than ideal though.

Google kills another product... I thought this was expected, not news.

The news today is that the existing prouducts will no longer function. The actual product line was discontinued in 2021.

i think this comment is more annoying than google killing products.

This is deeply annoying, not least of all because the hardware is evergreen and still works. It also is being replaced by hardware that is objectively worse: bigger, uglier, and single purpose. (I really like the combo motion sensor and door sensor from Nest.)

Why on earth Google can't rewrite the Nest Secure firmware to use ADT, I do not understand. Or why they can't persist support for it indefinitely. I understand they didn't want to migrate it's functionality into the Google Home app, which is the driving force behind this, since they're EOLing the Nest app, but this is inducing an insane amount of completely unnecessary e-waste.

Worse, there's no communication on if my Nest door locks will work with the new system. And I frankly really like how small the Nest Guard is. The ADT new hub looms like some monstrous obelisk.

How do you work for years and still produce a new line of products this much worse than what you're replacing?

Also Dropcam and Works with Nest. This may be a better link to share: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Blog/An-update-for-ou...

I am one of those crazies who's been using Nest Secure for perhaps five years now. After getting annoyed with having to arm and disarm it, it now just acts as a bridge for the door sensors and Yale locks. The door sensors I can live without, but I hope I don't have to buy the $70 Nest Connect in order to keep using the locks. I'm not going to get the ADT bundle, so I can use part of the $200 Google Store credit. But that could have gone towards a phone discount!

Were you able to get the discount yet? The code in my email doesn't work on the store, and when I asked support they opened an email ticket to keep me updated for when it's fixed.

I haven't tried yet. The discount is good until May 2024. I'll probably use it when the new Pixels launch.

It's just funny at this point
