If you have an extremely specific use case of ingesting large amounts of purely sequential data, then you can find situations where a fast HDD performs better than the cheapest SSDs you can find.

But that’s about it. The random I/O of even a cheap SSD will be far superior to the limited IO of a fast mechanical hard drive for typical workloads.
