Probably got traction because the headline is much clearer and the language is not twisted by the YC PR team.

It sucks for those impacted but at least it's not some BS excuse like in most recent layoffs. I hope they find new jobs soon.

Because that's the term being used for mass firings, even if you don't like it. You can look it up in a dictionary, it's a valid word.

What dictionary are you using? Impacted is being strongly affected by something. It's a vague term that avoids using the specific thing that happen: people were laid off. Being impacted could also mean got a promotion.
