The Machine Stops by Oliver Sacks (newyorker.com)

What a smart person was Oliver Sacks, and his writing was always thought provoking. In this piece, I believe he failed to identify the real value of cell phones to humans: validation. We far underestimate the social needs of the average person. The cell phone—and now the smartphone-is the fountain that satisfies our continuous thirst for social validation. It’s not what is being said, it is that someone else is paying attention.
