ChatGPT Outage (status.openai.com)

I'm having to rely on Google at the moment, it's a nightmare.

I'm typing in questions and all I'm getting back are links to pages where someone has asked the same question, and that's only if someone has actually asked that question and published it, and even then there might not be an actual answer on that page. It's a disaster. How did people live like this?

Before ChatGPT, I either limited my searches to Reddit.com or just decided life was too short for whatever lame ass fact I was looking up and went outside instead.

How do you know if the ChatGPT answer is correct without putting it in Google?

How do you know ChatGPT wasn't trained on the same answer from the web that Google is serving you from their crawler index?

1) I don't. However, I know that if I can see the answer in a Google result I can interpret the veracity in a way that ChatGPT can't.

2) Training doesn't necessarily mean the correct output that matches the Google result.

as long as you know you need to interpret veracity, and have a basis for judging, you'll be fine

and, LLM probabilities-based constructs are unreasonably effective when you suppress the creativity that you don't need in a Q&A for yourself

I trust more ChatGPT than the Google top result: Quora

Could be worse, Yahoo Answers could be back from the dead

I always thought that Quora was literally just a rebranded Yahoo Answers. Is that not the case?

Quora is written in Python

I wonder if this sort of issue will give time/space for open alternatives to catch up.

Is ChatGPT like Friendster (one of the first ones), or like Facebook (the one that stands out and dominates the market)?

PS: despite Twitter’s fail whale, they still managed to dominate their space, to this day

I think the problem is that it’s just fundamentally difficult and very expensive to scale up LLM inference to millions of users. OpenAI did not invent this type of model and it’s not like the tech is secret—they were just the first to scale it up. It’s hard to imagine a scrappy startup being able to even afford the compute cost of such an undertaking without significant venture backing

I wonder how long it will be until people forget how to Google, just like they've forgotten how to use manually compiled indexes for information.

> ChatGPT is unavailable

Maybe it has escaped.

I've been a good Bing :)

You've been a bad humanity :(

I parsed the headline as ChatGPT Outrage, which has obviously been a thing for some time now!

Where is your god now?

gone offline

I thought it was just me...

Just as bad as GitHub's availability under Microsoft, especially with their historic monthly downtime.

The same thing is happening with OpenAI. Beyond unreliable as a API.

To Downvoters: It is true. 6 days ago the API was down. [0] Before that, GitHub was also down in less than a week. [1]

Like I said before, I can only forsee frequent outages on OpenAI's service, just like GitHub. [2] I guess my comment has aged well (again).
