Ask HN: Ex-users of CentOS, what do you run now?

Are you still on CentOS?

Did you try AlmaLinux?

Did you try Rocky Linux?

Which distro did you land on as a replacement for CentOS on your servers?

How did you end up at the choice, and do you think you are likely to continue to run that distro?

It’s been roughly two years since RedHat terminated development of CentOS. It’d be interesting to know where people in the HN crowd who used to rely on CentOS have turned to since then.

CentOS Stream 9, which is basically RHEL9 9.(x+1). The issue itself was overblown to hell, and after realizing that "rolling release" meant "one minor release ahead", I decided to stick with it.

For my usecase, it works fine and nothing has changed at all. My workloads are mostly container-based, so the base OS doesn't matter as much.

I run RHEL-like because I'm familiar with it (since I use Fedora as my desktop/workstation OS), so CentOS will likely stay unless I get myself fully immersed into the alternatives down the road.

For one set of things, I’m using RHEL 9 with the free developer subscription: Sign up on the Red Hat developer site, and you get a self-support subscription for 16 machines. You do have to renew it regularly, though it’s an easy process.

For everything else, Rocky 9.1.

Same. Free RHEL where being rock solid matters, Rocky where it doesn’t but I still want “basically production” level compatibility (eg CI/staging). RHEL9 is a fine distro with all modern niceties most teams need.

I formerly used CentOS on everything for a very long time and was a strong advocate for it. I moved to Alpine Linux for all of my personal servers, firewalls and routers. I alternate between VoidLinux and Qubes OS for a daily driver. Any time I get bored with a daily driver I try out one of the options on without-systemd [1] but I typically fall back to either Void or Qubes.

Company switched to Alma, I switched to Fedora

CentOS was never terminated, it just switched from stable to unstable

I'm running Rocky Linux (rockylinux.org). It's been good; no reason to move so far.

RockyLinux

Ubuntu

But'll be moving to Opensuse soon
