Ask HN: Tips for Transitioning into the Music Industry?
2 points by aecorredor on Feb 23, 2023 | hide | past | favorite | 6 comments
Looking for tips from anybody here who’s done it already. What can one expect? Is it profitable enough?

EDIT: to be clear, I mean making a transition while leveraging software.

The music industry, like any creative pursuit, is only profitable if you're in the top 1%, even then you're making as much as an entry level softer engineer in the midwest

Except it's MRR as opposed to salary.

Are you looking to become a musician, work with a label, or work on music software?

Music software, or anything software related in the music industry.

How about some simple side-projects to show that you're invested in music and capable of making things?

Other than that, I think you just need to start sending out applications. In the past, I've had a lot of luck with https://angel.co and the HN hiring threads.

Yeah, that’s for sure something I’ve looked at (like developing VST plugins for ableton for example). But that market seems pretty saturated too.

I’ve been looking for insights from people in the industry about problems they have now (that software could solve), but it’s been pretty hard.

I’m also learning piano + guitar + ableton, so maybe as I go I’ll have problems that I could solve for myself and others.
