What's the point of stricter gun control laws, if those laws aren't applied by prosecutors? I suspect those three kids would still be alive if the prosecutor had applied them in this case.
But lets pretend the prosecutor wants to offer leniency to the offender in this case: They could still have prosecuted it. And then accepted deferred prosecution in exchange for treatment, a restriction on owning firearms, etc.
This is more broadly a problem with DAs not doing their jobs for "reasons" such as influence peddling by groups that shouldn't be meddling with DAs jobs.
To make it even worse, our political critters are bought and sold by NGOs and high moneyed interests thanks to billionaire influence peddlers. We can thank ESG and efforts to reduce racism for the reasons why laws aren't being applied evenly and fairly.
Unfortunately this slow boil is what ultimately leads to civil unrest and even wars.
