Musk's Neuralink people appear to have done a bad thing, but do think their research and technology is important. Arguably just punishing those responsible with fines and training can be enough, and let the research proceed. We are talking about helping large numbers of people with disabilities, in hopefully the not to distant future.

Why are we okay with experimenting on rats but not on monkeys?

The same reason it’s ok to eat pigs but not dogs. Humans place animals into fictional categories which dictate the acceptable level of abuse that is allowed to be inflicted upon the animal.

It’s not fictional. If there are degrees of awareness, a pig is much more aware than a rat.

> If there are degrees of awareness, a pig is much more aware than a rat.

And your source for this preposterous statement is...? Rats are extremely intelligent and social animals.

Then, per argument of previous person, why eat pigs and not dogs (though some countries make exceptions)? Why eat cows, but not horses?

I’ve eaten horse. Cows taste better and are easier to raise.

How will you or anyone ever be able to know this… just because you cannot perceive it, you assume it cannot exist?

They're also more intelligent than dogs yet we prefer to eat one.
