His embrace of uniformitarianism was based on traveling across South America, a fantastic place to observe it. The catastrophists that Lyell was fighting made most of their observations in Europe and Scandanavia, where there was lots of evidence for (in geological terms) sudden changes. More importantly, the ideas of gradual, continual geological evolution that he observed so carefully made it possible for him to imagine the same processes happening in the evolution of living things.
