I honestly always test this with with video chat Mute buttons. I feel like it is only recently that UX designers designed a way to show that you are muted that is different from the Mute switch, which is a complete guess as to what state you are in.

Video chat mute is one of the worst offenders. If I recall correctly MS Teams behaves the exact opposite of zoom using the same ux.
