Imagine TweetBot and Twitterrific just silently became dual Twitter/Mastodon clients, automatically following Mastodon accounts that are followed on Twitter, and when Twitter API is unavailable, customers don't notice a thing.

A Mastodon version of TweetBot is already in development, and nearly finished. It's called "Ivory". https://tapbots.com/ivory/

The customers would notice because with mastodon the apps would actually fetch content.

They'd notice because the people they were following would change, as not everyone on Twitter is on Mastodon.

Nah, it's just "the algorithm" deciding who to show you like any ad-social site.

Sheer coincidence it decides to show you the sort of folks that might try Mastodon. ;-)

Would have been nice to see - silently gathering mastodon links of all your follows and building a twitter alt

As it is these clients only fed off the main twitter api and when that was turned off it errors out

More likely is a shift to have news updates through instagram, Facebook, or TikTok.
