I know public perception of US news outlets is on shakey ground but holy shit this is a cynical take.
Whatever you think about the New York Times and its employees, they are not evil. You may not like how they are covering the war but the journalists are not trying to get their interviewees killed.
One might assume that having a mobile number of a mobile device will give the triangulated location of that device. Where is one, there have to be more.
But yes, its not a news outlets problem. Totally agree with you here. But, as long as it can't be ruled out, that someone may laid out some nickels and pointed to that.. imho 2% possibility on that. Very very unlikely.

Why would you think they're disaffected? The quotes are manufactured and attributed to random soldiers - loyal or not. At the moment the only good Russian is a dead Russian so this is a great way to weaken their morale.
