Mikes Electric Stuff is one of my absolute favourite channels on YouTube. Highly recommend.

A couple of classics:

Heavily modified BBC Micro:

Design of LED sculpture with some interesting commentary:

If you want to see what came of this work you can check out the promo video for the art piece at Weill Cornell which it became - https://vimeo.com/97061566

iirc, Mike did the eletronics and firmware on the boards, and Hirsch&Mann did the "content management" software for it.

LCD displays are among the most fragmented hardware when it comes to firmware. An open-source standardized driver is essentially impossible to achieve, and that also makes e.g. Linux "mainlining" more painful after the official firmware stops receiving updates. Happy to see more and more independent reversing attempts around.

This article is from 2013. It's useful to note that 1.54" 240x240 IPS displays can now be had for <$5 [1] with much easier to work with interfaces.

I miss the nano. It was the last Apple product that was differentiated in any way from its lower cost competitors.

(2013)

I remember watching these videos when they first appeared. Mike has some other interesting stuff on his YouTube channel too.
