If anyone has been clamoring for one of these in the US, they just got released.

Flipper Zero is a portable Tamagotchi-like[1] multi-functional device developed for interaction with access control systems. The device is able to read, copy, and emulate radio-frequency (RFID) tags, radio remotes, and digital access keys.[2] It was first announced in August 2020 through the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, which raised $4.8M.[3] The first devices were delivered to backers 18 months after completion of the crowdfunding campaign.

Flipper Zero is designed for interaction with various types of access control systems, radio protocols, RFID, near-field communication (NFC), and infrared signals.[5][6] To operate the device, it is not required to have a computer or a smartphone — it can be controlled via a 5-position D-pad and a separate back button. Flipper Zero has a monochrome orange backlight LCD screen with a resolution of 128x64 pixels. For connection with external modules, the device has general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pinholes on the top side. User data and firmware updates are stored on a Micro SD card. Some actions, such as firmware or user data update, require a connection to a computer or a smartphone with developer's software installed.

They've been sold in the US for months. It's just that they keep running out of stock.

Pro-tip for those acquiring one: Set up a website stock-checking script in Cron. The "notify me" signup lags by a lot. I didn't get an in-stock notification until hours after they were in stock. And they were sold out by the time the notification arrived.

Fortunately, I had a script running and got mine hours before I got the email.

Got one a few months ago. Very neat toy but haven’t had time to really get into all of its capabilities yet.

flipperzero.one is the site.

Mine is due to arrive tomorrow.

As a layman: Can someone explain what this devices is used for?

It's a combination of sensors and emitters for various commonly used protocols and frequencies all wrapped up in a nice little package with a microcontroller that can run custom code ('apps'). A lot of people buy it hoping to be the next l33t hax0r but its not a mainstream gadget. I got one in the first post-kickstarter shipment and its a pretty slick device with a very steep learning curve. I mostly use mine for 2 things. 1: To keep a copy of all of my key cards for my various clients (I'm a consultant) and 2: to turn off annoying TVs in public places.
