Linus: Maybe it's time to get rid of i486 support in 2022 (kernel.org)

Assuming this does happen, and that there are no more LTS kernels released before it does, it will still end up being almost 38 years of support for it (i486 launched in April 1989, Linux 5.10 EOL in December 2026). I wish we had mobile devices with official software support for even half that long.


To be picky, Linux 0.02 was late 1991, I don't think that it supported anything between 1989 and 1991, and even later, until 1.0 in 1994, you couldn't do much in Linux.

Still, 2026-1994 is 32 years, and I would gladly settle for mobile device support 1/3 of that (ten years).

What are the minimal x86 SoCs at right now? All i586?
