It's being suggested that the FBI may have disappeared a journalist who promoted a theory that went against the official story being told by the Department of Defense.
He’s probably in hiding not detained. We don’t disappear people here.
FBI and other unspecified agencies raided his apartment, claim to have found sensitive documents on a computer, he wasn’t seen being arrested. Hasn’t been seen since, but his lawyer implies he’s been in contact.
FBI isn’t commenting because active investigation. He’ll probably finish his story, drop it for publishing and surface in a few months. It’ll be big and juicy, momentarily embarrassing for the government, but honestly there have been a dozen “embarrassing” exposes and the government abides.
And we know this because whenever it's reported to have happened, authorities debunk such claims by pointing out it doesn't happen here.
I agree that in this case he's probably just avoiding the FBI, but even that tends to indicate that the FBI does disappear people, or else it wouldn't be necessary to avoid them while in possession of, uh, hurtful material.
I think the US is much more inclined to use parallel construction and the full extent of the legal system to bring down someone, which while can be similar, is not quite the same as someone simply never being seen again.
