This certainly isn't going to be right for everyone, but I downloaded the docker container for searxng a week or two ago and I've been using that. It's not the best solution for most people, but I've been very happy using that. You can read about it at docs.searxng.org
No. You're right. It's open. It's private. But it gets the data from other search engines. I was thinking of it from the perspective of a private and open source tool for searching. I was not thinking of an actual "search engine".
