The first conference after the summer recess is known as The Long Conference. All the petitions that stack up over the summer recess (3 months) are dealt with at the first conference of the term. Terms start in the September/October and end in June of the following year. This year there were >1000 petitions for The Long Conference [0].
Petitions to the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) only get read by 3 clerks. 7 of the 9 justices have their clerks go into the "Cert Pool" [1], while Justices Gorsuch and ... Alito have their clerks read all the petitions. The 3 clerks write summaries of each of the petitions for their justices to read.
The problem with the cert pool is which of the 7 clerks happens to get your petition. While Justice Thomas' clerk might've loved my petition, Justice Kagan's clerk might have dismissed me without even bothering to read past the 2nd page.
So little faith this court will act responsibly, so likely they will make some crappy ill thought out super jank disruption.
Of course we manage to find an utterly absurd case to start chopping away at the protection of hosting users content online with: ISIS terrorism. Fear Uncertainty & Doubt & Terrorists to roll back freedom with. Of course.
