It's wild, apparently at the latest Peer Review conference a lot of the focus was on paper mills. I'm so curious what goes into identifying these -- e.g. if it's a technical or a social process -- and so on. I know for example a lot of it is by reviewing comments from peer reviews (which unfortunately aren't always public / open) [1].
Certainly some of the co-authors were unaware (?), but will be affected. Totally crappy situation.
