I use an outliner. It includes a full-featured word-processor that associates an internal text document with each item in the outline (a common feature). This feature is essential as most of the work takes place within the document associated with an outline item. The outline grows overly-large and cluttered periodically, and I need to re-organize and synthesize the mess. This gives me a chance to form a synoptic view of my work.
