This is interesting but requires a true colour terminal, i was kind of hoping it would transcode to ASCII art each frame... Hmmm interesting weekend project i think.

Edit : just looking through the source, it actually looks like it is doing that.. the true colour should be optional so!


you can use the command line argument -b ascii to use ascii (thanks for reminding me to add documentation!)


Circa 2005 mplayer supported both “aalib” and “calib” output for black and Color ascii art respectively.

mpv can do that too: mpv --vo=tct {file}


Why would I want to view video files in the terminal?


Because you can, of course.
