You will not innovate anything without standards in an area where lots of diverse parts have to work together in any kind of network.

Proprietary tech is never without standards; it just has some embrace-and-extend angle on something, or some niche or whatever.

Imagine if every city had differently shaped power outlets and voltages; how much fun would it be to innovate in the home appliance space?

Crack open anything proprietary and there is a ton of standard, recognizable parts that could be substituted from multiple vendors.


I was about to rag on Spotify about not supporting a standard part of the mp3 spec used by podcasts - chapters. Since the author of the article cofounder Anchor and was acquired by Spotify.

I then found that most podcast players don’t either.
