Show HN: Vocoder – source code dictation and voice control (github.com/ricky0123)

Hi HN, I created a system for voice programming and voice control similar to projects like Dragonfly and Talon. For those who aren't familiar, these are programs for dictation that give you more flexibility than the large commercial dictation programs like Dragon, which is necessary when dictating source code (with its unusual words and formatting). They're popular among programmers with hand pain, but can be useful for others as well.

Very cool. It's easy to see how you derived the name (VOice CODER) but the name is really confusing, since a vocoder (VOice enCODER) is something that makes your voice sound like the intro to Mr. Roboto, or for more serious uses such as voice audio compression and encryption.

And it's entirely possible you've used an actual vocoder to create this.

Thanks, and yeah I can see how the name would give the wrong impression at first. It was meant to be a play on words, giving a new interpretation to that already existing word.

I took it as a play on words, but the problem is that the context doesn't really change. It's not an "at first" thing. The name is confusing since vocoders are still very much a thing, and they can even be used to do what your software does.

It isn't all that different than naming a car "Wheel" and wondering why everyone is so confused when they hear the phrase "Take the Wheel." Clever, but misguided.
