Setting a timer yourself to remind you of some future important event is a very different proposition than what most people mean when they say "notifications": allowing an ever-growing constellation of commercially motivated ad sales companies to initiate pings on the phone they carry around 24 hours a day and grab at their attention at any time, for resale purposes.

On the face of it yes, but the bigger point I was trying to make is that some of us have challenges with remembering things and external prompts/interruptions (alarms, timers, notifications) are in that case all the same thing.

If I’m not going to remember myself, or check on something in time to act on it (say a message), I need another system to do it.

But not everyone is like that. So we’re always going to fall on a spectrum between no notifications and all notifications.

I did touch on ads in notifications, they’re violation of the trust in allowing someone to interrupt you. Unless you signed up to be notified about time-sensitive deals, that notifications is going to disappoint.
