I don't get it. Wouldn't a rational actor simply avoid being scammed?

I think we can all agree that you have to be pretty fucking stupid to fall for some hot girl randomly reaching out via whatsapp and offering you investment advice.

And yet blaming victims will solve nothing but incentivise more bad actors that think themselves morally justified.

How do you propose that this ages old scam could be “solved”?

The “bad actors” are based overseas, largely out of reach of any realistic enforcement action. No amount of financial education will save these idiots.

Perhaps the only realistic solution would be to further restrict personal financial freedoms, which hardly seems like a good thing.

Between people are rational and they knowingly took risks and people are irrational and must be protected from themselves, where and how do we draw a line?

On informed and uninformed people. Cryptocurrency companies sell their services to people that does not have the knowledge to understand what they are buying. Exotic investments should be limited to professionals that can evaluate the situation.

That seems a good place to allow knowledgeable individuals to buy this kind of services and avoid companies and scammers preying on the general public.

You may put the line somewhere else, but for me it seems reasonable.

This really has nothing to do with cryptocurrency though. This is just a classic brokerage scam, no different than the countless forex scams or Israeli binary options.

This is a common scam that’s not at all exclusive to “exotic investments”. Cryptocurrency just happens to be the fashionable lure today.
