But guidance is an incredibly weak standard. The CDC for example recommend you only eat steaks cooked to a temperature that works out to medium done or higher. I suspect I'm not even sure the guidance on the state level is actually different. I suspect just less reported on
That’s exactly the critique. The CDC makes blanket recommendations that aren’t based in science and assume you dear citizen are incapable of grappling with nuanced advice.
That’s incredibly classist and condescending. Any adult can understand that for example rare meat is somewhat risky, but not very and that risk may increase with ground meat. Anyone could understand that some masks are better than others.
This sort of disdain for average people is exactly why the CDC is being criticized here.
[Edit] to anyone who disagrees, I’d love a justification from principle for the government treating the poor and uneducated like they’re stupid.
I’m from a place we’re most people don’t go to college. I know farmers, metal workers, some union guys at a tire factory, someone who works at a truck stop, and some people who can barely read and just sort get by. They’re all interesting to talk to in their own way and have some insights into how the world works based on their own frame of reference. With maybe one exception they’re all capable of having a nuanced discussion if you speak with them in a respectful manner and take the time to listen. I disagree with most of them about a lot, but hell I disagree with you too.
Be kind. Don't be snarky. Have curious conversation; don't cross-examine. Please don't fulminate. Please don't sneer, including at the rest of the community.
Comments should get more thoughtful and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive.
When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. "That is idiotic; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3."
The following is the CDC's 5 point pledge to the American people from their website. Note "Treat all persons with dignity, honesty, and respect" and the part about high quality data.
1. Be a diligent steward of the funds entrusted to our agency
2. Provide an environment for intellectual and personal growth and integrity
3. Base all public health decisions on the highest quality scientific data that is derived openly and objectively
4. Place the benefits to society above the benefits to our institution
5. Treat all persons with dignity, honesty, and respect
