The paywall stopped me. What solution do they propose?


Avoid cross-contamination by washing your hands thoroughly and giving different sponges their own jobs. It's possible to decontaminate a sponge in the microwave if it's wet and generates a good amount of steam. Putting sponges through the dishwasher is also effective. But if they smell bad, you should probably just throw them away.
