I came to Linux from a Windows world, so KDE always made more sense to me. I think, with the exception of 4.0, KDE has been fundamentally less bad than gnome since at least 2002. A sweet spot for me was KDE3.5 and then again current day KDE plasma. I like the customisability.
I think the gnome foot is a better icon, though.
