I don’t understand how they intend to defend against porch pirates shooting them down and taking the packages

Why would they need to shoot them down? Porch pirates just take packages that are delivered while nobody's home... that model still works fine with drones, and adding a bunch of gunshots to it doesn't seem like it would improve the chances of success...

Depending on whether a drone is considered a vehicle, that might be classified as a felony. Even people willing to be "porch pirates" and steal delivered packages might not want to commit a crime that could yield serious prison time.

The kinds of places you have rampant porch pirates have a large intersection with the kinds of places the cops will jump at the chance to roll up with five cruisers to harass someone over a negligent discharge.

Regardless, nobody is gonna waste bullets on drones when you can just nab it off the porch after it lands and drops it off.

Kids playing target practice with whatever's available to throw at them seems more likely to me, but my dated perception of childhood still has kids outside terrorizing neighborhoods and generally raising hell.

Do kids still throw rocks at passing trains?

You can just walk down any suburban street at mid-day and load up your wagon with all kinds of packages. Why draw attention to yourself trying to shoot a drone?

I really want this but somehow I know that SF will be one of the last places to allow this type of service.

They're remotely piloting them. That seems horribly unscalable. Not that the basic idea isn't ALREADY unscalable.

Does anybody know how they communicate with them? Is this something that's going to be burning more radio spectrum for minimal benefit?

Flying drones around all day could be a fun minimum wage job at least. Well, maybe not, i assune they look down on doing flips.

hows it less scalable than hiring delivery drivers? esp if they have large drones capable of delivering multiple packages?
