Biden Says U.S. Would Intervene Militarily If China Invaded Taiwan (wsj.com)

This is a political topic, but posted here since the switch away from Strategic Ambiguity is a historically significant statement. Given the impact Taiwan has on the tech industry, I felt it is not off-topic.

My interpretation is that there is an internal struggle between China hawks and doves in the Biden admin, leading Biden mostly to walk back whatever move either faction does (plus sometimes freestyling some gaffes of his own). For example full sanctions on Hikvision or removal of Trump's China tarifs. Or this, which is a reoccuring theme.

The end-result is a sort of drifting around the status quo.

A full recognition of Taiwan as its own nation would break the "3 comminiques" between China and the US, and also be a massive change in the internal politics of both Taiwan and mainland China.

I don't think any of the parties involved see now as a good time to do this.

Also WSJ tends to be an outlet for China hawks - here is the same story in NY Times:

The White House quickly tried to deny that the president meant what he seemed to be saying. “As the president said, our policy has not changed,” the White House said in a statement hurriedly sent to reporters. “He reiterated our One China Policy and our commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He also reiterated our commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with the military means to defend itself.”
