There’s a lot to dislike about forced in office policies, but this letter’s diversity claims stinks of bullshit being made up to not just sound like entitled folk whining.
I actually just turned down a job offer, albeit a w2-contractor role, as a PD at Apple, for this reason alone. Even though it had the possibility to become full time at Apple, I’d rather be fully remote at my current company.
You agreed to a job where you would work in a specific location, your employer continues to want you to work there. No one is saying or asking anything of you outside of work hours, just that work hours require being in the office. Just because you don’t think it’s necessary isn’t relevant, you are required to do the job, and they’ve decided for whatever reason that they consider being visible in the office a part of the job. That was a part before Covid, and it remains part now.
When this first started and people were told to stay home it was explicitly stated that employees would be required to return to the office eventually, people rewriting the past to pretend that wasn’t the case are just deluding themselves, and frankly that letter felt like it was trying to exploit those groups it claimed were disproportionately harmed to create favour for its positions.
I was against going back to the office too (just 2 days a week, but still). Having gone back I can't argue against it, it's just more productive to be in the same space as your team.
