Ask HN: Where can I find unusual UI inspiration?
7 points by Hbruz0 on May 7, 2022 | hide | past | favorite | 8 comments
I'm building an app and I don't want it to look like all the other competitors. Is there a website where I can find inspiration for audacious/unusual/novel designs ? Thank you

Philosophy and experimentation. I managed to create a few features that are missing in every single UI, but nobody have ever noticed. These will make a lot of sense when they see them for the first time. I'm very interested in compact UI's that present more information without cluttering, about infinite desktops, multi-representations of data, customization of media, graphs depth, persistency and so on. It's more about the mechanics of UI's than style and animations.

These two used to be popular:

+1 for dribbble

I’d recommend juniors that are looking for projects for their portfolios to find something in dribbble that they find interesting and implement it

It sounds like you're confusing novelty with usability. Instead of worrying about competitors, focus on your first customers. What do they want? What do they need? What value can you provide that your competition does not? Is a unique - yet perhaps confusing - UI really the best way to differentiate? To add value??

I find video game UIs to be inspiring and different because they must serve player engagement, discovery, and fun -- none of which are typically goals of business apps.

Forza Horizon 4 (and 5) for example have great interfaces for a complex game. So does Jurassic World Evolution.

Video games, anime and movies

Winamp skins.

are.na is great
