Ask HN: How can I build relationships in college?
5 points by adawg4 on April 24, 2022 | hide | past | favorite | 2 comments
I came in with a startup with decent usage traction (not too much revenue unfortunately) and made the mistake of looking for Co-Founders. What ensued was someone uncommitted coming onboard and I made a bad hire I had to fire later. I decided its best to leverage the connections you build but I am at square one having focused heavily on side projects the past few years but just started college. Any advice on gettong really solid relationships set up and potentially down the line enabling us to work on something or trying to bring them onboard in a year or two?

It's unclear what kind of relationship you want. You want to work with someone, but only 1-2 years from now?

If you're interested in working with someone, a solid relationship will probably start with telling them that.

If you're looking for friends, a solid relationship might start with not pursuing it with the explicit goal of furthering your start-up. Just find people with agreeable aspirations, values and hobbies and have fun. The sooner you forget the motivations you've spelled out here, the better.

Choose carefully who you work with on school projects. Choose people who you see are more curious in classes, ask hard questions or just looks like an overachiever
