Seems like a cool idea, but Iā€™m moving to Mars in a few years.

TLDR: I started https://github.com/pogopaule/awesome-sustainability-jobs to make it easier for you to find a job in which you can help to fight climate change or contribute to sustainability in general.

A few years ago, the topic of climate change and sustainability, in general, became increasingly important to me. I wanted to at least reduce my contribution to climate change as much as was feasible for me. I did the typical things: sold the car and switched to public transportation, vacations without taking the plane, changed diet and consumption in general, etc.

For a while I completely ignored that I was doing the exact opposite eight hours a day at work: I worked as a software developer for a company that was all the more successful the more greenhouse gases were pumped into the atmosphere. As a software developer, depending on the job, you can sometimes ignore what your employer is doing and just focus on technology and code...That's what I did until I couldn't ignore my hypocrisy anymore. So I started looking for companies that focus on energy transition, transportation transition, agricultural transition, etc.

To my surprise, although these companies (which also had jobs for software developers) existed, but were damn hard to find. They just disappeared in the flood of job offers for software developers. Often these companies are startups or SMEs and don't advertise on the big job boards. In addition, my search was pre-pandemic and for many companies, remote work was not a thing. As a result, I collected numerous links to company sites, and soon the idea was born to share these links with others. After all, if it's such a hassle for everyone to find a developer job in sustainability, I figured many would eventually abandon the search out of frustration.

I hope that awesome-sustainability-jobs will lower the barrier to entry and more software developers will switch companies. We all know how hard it is for companies to acquire talented developers, so for many companies that try to fight climate change, it is vital that you join them.

Disclaimer: I am adding companies to the best of my knowledge and hope that I have filtered out companies that are just greenwashing. However, I have not done a deep analysis of the companies. So see the list as a starting point and evaluate the companies yourself.

You will certainly notice that there are a disproportionately large number of companies in the USA and Germany. This is simply because I only speak English and German. I would be very happy if many more companies from all over the world made it to the list. The list needs support from all of you! :)
