Worth checking out OpenMW if you've never seen it. Fully open source re-implementation of the Morrowind engine with creation kit for making full games and other non-Morrowind content. They've put a lot of emphasis on supporting all of the old code and scripts plus converting content over to new formats.

Mark Jones graphic style is so impressive and distinctive (https://members.tripod.com/dragons_eyrie/darkmere.html). Wish the 3d designs followed his Battlespire ones more.

I always preferred the Morrowind approach to the general look of things. Elves looked more alien and less human to give them that other-worldly vibe that's lacking from their modern iterations.
