I miss usenet. Why did it go away? I remember maybe it was AOL and then later the local ISP limiting binary access, then access all together, and thought to myself "hah, fatal mistake. this will surely tank the business".

How wrong I was.


Usenet died because ISPs were getting hammered for hosting child porn on binary groups. They took that opportunity to just drop Usenet hosting altogether. The general public never cared enough for other Usenet providers to fill in the gap and so it died an unceremonious death.
