Apparently it is now an eating disorder to eat in a way that makes you particularly healthy, as long as you obsess about it more than the author considers healthy. I have no doubt that people can develop serious neurosis around eating behavior. But to call that an eating disorder when the actual eating behavior is unusually healthy isn't right.
"Orthorexia nervosa" is "a proposed eating disorder characterized by an excessive preoccupation with eating healthy food." I'd argue that the "excessive preoccupation" part is the disorder, not the part where you eat an unusually healthy diet. That makes it, in an important way, the reverse of unhealthy eating behaviors like binging or purging.
Is this article a joke? There is no mention of why eating healthily would have negative life consequences. There is, however, a sleight of hand in which the author blames the subject of the piece’s “eating disorder” for him losing his job. Was he eating steak while working at a vegan smoothie shop? Clown world is back at it again.
