The Reason America Doesn't Have Enough Truck Drivers (nytimes.com)

The discussion about analogous problems in the UK post brexit go to both renumeration and infrastructure. This article talks about how torrid the truckstop toilets, showers and food are. European long distance drivers have said norms on the continent include properly cleaned and resourced truckstops which are more pleasant and so make having the job safer and healthier. They avoid driving jobs in the UK because it's an unpleasant place to be a truck driver.

I'm sure there are still some dank holes, but it's not axiomatic a long distance driver has to put up with it.

Maybe if trucking companies in the US put time and effort into truck stops, they'd have a better outcome?

Why is anything still transported cross-country on trucks, instead of only using trucks to move things the "last mile" and using trains for the cross-country portion of the trip? Wouldn't the job of being a truck driver be a lot less unpleasant if all routes were local?
