So what are we expecting from the Telescope? I know it can look far back into the universe's time. But if you point out at our closest Star, would you be able to see planets in reasonable resolution (reasonable being some detail showing polar ice caps for example).



Your link says the opposite, no it can't:

"...resolving a distant exoplanet next to its star so that it looks like a Hubble or Voyager image of a planet in our Solar System is still far beyond its powers... We’ll see exoplanets directly, Lewis says, the larger ones anyway, but they’ll appear as “just one bright dot.”"


I get way too excited looking at this. I can't wait for full resolution.


Can’t wait to see some long IR exposures


So it is very good at selfies. At least hubble could do some astrophotography not pictures with night sky.
