i've noticed that you can sometimes tell who paid to originate a story by looking at the first person quoted and their company.

I'm not sure I believe unions are the primary reason. Even non-unionized workers in fossil fuels make more than the average renewable job.
Maybe it's because renewables provide less jobs. Lower demand means lower pay.
