"What is art?" aside, look at for example how much of "the art world" exists to support the business of people making say paints and canvases and etc as it does to enable people to express themselves.

People are going to express themselves, anyway. "Art" is a scam where we tell folks "express yourself in this way and with my expensive supplies and you will be heard, you will be valued, and you will be rewarded!" ... But most paintings are done solely for the joy of the artists and could have been daubed onto a plank as effectively as a commercially prepared mass production canvas.
