Ask HN: Alternative to Google Translate?

Are there any better alternatives to google translate? It doesn't matter that much if the solution is FOSS and does not rely on 3rd-party APIs, but such a thing would be highly appreciated too.

https://www.deepl.com/translator is what I use. Can only recommend it but I've never personally used their API.

As someone who is multilingual, DeepL consistently gets better results (and more humanlike) between the four different languages I know, than any other free translator right now.

Seconded. The service is excellent, and the paid version for longer documents absolutely worth it.

DeepL is unbelievable great! It's very flexible, it has informal and formal mode, presents several synonymous for some words, and so on.

Good youtube video to show examples and a good watch for privacy

Mate is a paid product on iOS and macOS at least which is good. Apple also has the built in translate app in iOS 15 and I believe the latest macOS (though I could be wrong on macOS)

Bing Translate. It actually works better for Chinese & Japanese IMHO

Maybe try the trick Telegram was doing?

I'm taking more of a quality side than quantity.
