This story is misinformation. It is a shame that so many are upvoting and spilling vitriol without properly vetting the information.
In fact, the winners of the book auction do understand that they do not own the intellectual property. They have a goal of using their remaining funds to acquire the intellectual property.

If that is the case it shows how much investment money is running wild around. They spend 2.6 million in something that is not so important. It could also be a publicity stunt, but they look quite bad right now.
My understanding is that purchasing the book is, among other things, supposed to be a publicity stunt that enables them to spur further interest in their project including convincing current IP holders that they are serious about producing new Dune-related content.

they could have been more explicit about how #2 is as unlikely as it was before they won the auction.
On their official Medium account they are explicit about the fact that winning the auction has no direct legal effects on their ability to produce the animated series. [1]. Their goal is to leverage the publicity from the auction to open doors for discussions with the current IP holders in order to make progress on the animated series.
I know someone who worked for Jodorowsky and from the ‘less than jubilant’ stories I've heard about the guy, they'll have their work cut out, or they'll have to wait for him to pass.
