Ask HN: Best data practices leaving a company
4 points by michaelje on Jan 4, 2022 | hide | past | favorite | 1 comment
About to leave a startup on good terms, but still want to clean up behind me and reduce the amount of PII left floating around. Outside of the personal OneDrive (using the o365 stack), email, and a few product specific tools - anything else worth thinking about?

Nothing to hide and zero interest in being malicious - more and more I prefer to be tidy and leave less behind.

Remove the work email address from any personal accounts (e.g. LinkedIn, github). Depending on the company you may or may not be allowed to export email. I’ve archived mail concerning performance, compensation, HR or benefits issues (and archive it, don’t merge it into your personal email account). Even if you’re leaving on good terms make sure you have a copy of any messages or documents that describe your performance and contributions.
