You probably want a few alternating stripes of files and free space. Or do what most people did, which is keep a mostly empty hard drive.

You must have a different definition of most. Everyone I knew was always needing a new drive because the current one was full. Empty drive? What's that? The thing in the box. 30 seconds after turning it on, it was 80% full!
