SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 (Omicron) Variant – United States, December 1–8, 2021 (cdc.gov)

Omicron was 0.00% of cases last week in the USA. USA is not a good case study, yet. We just don't have enough Omicron to really understand it on our shores.

Instead, I suggest to people to watch UK and South Africa instead. They drew the "short straw" so to speak, and it looks like Omicron is spreading wildly over there. (Well over 2% of cases in UK with exponential rises seen, while South Africa Omicron is already dominant)

I'm sure Omicron will be an issue here in the USA. But for now, keep an eye out on what happens with other countries, and see if we can learn from their actions. We have gotten a bit lucky and can afford to sit back and learn for an extra few weeks compared to these other countries.

EDIT: With "community spread" of Omicron, I'm sure that USA will see our share of Omicron soon. But I'm more willing to look at what the UK's health agencies say about it, rather than the CDC at the moment.

South Africa drew the short straw as far back as in May 2021, as they opted for a slower vaccine rollout.

With 25% vaccinated they are an easy target for a new Corona variant. Many western countries are well into 70% vaccinated, which makes it hard to draw any conclusion from what is happening in South Africa.
