College professors “have become so involved in outside research that their commitment to teaching seems compromised,” the commission found. Unrest was most common at the largest universities, which had “failed [students] in a larger moral sense” by herding them into enormous classes taught by disengaged faculty members or inexperienced graduate students. ”
