When raising issues for GitHub projects, I have wondered if I should preface the issue with a note of appreciation. It does feel odd when your first interaction with a stranger and volunteer is "your code has a bug here". OTOH, "thanks for your project" does not convey technical information and could be considered noise.
I consider adding a short sentence to appreciate the project absolutely fine. As a user of an opensource project, I consider every opensource project to be a gift. It's a gift given to me from the authors/maintainers of the project under the terms of an open source license that guarantees some useful rights that I care about. I feel that thanking the project authors/maintainers for this gift is the least I can do while submitting a bug report.
