I'm always mystified by people who argue that something terrible will happen if the names of institutions are changed. Other countries avoid a lot of these problems by not naming everything after people. You'd have to be naive not to realize that a lot of bequests/endowments are just reputation laundering or a genteel form of self-promotion, an ethical minefield that institutional fiduciaries should steer clear of.


Concur on your first point. Hastings should take a breath and recognize this as a huge opportunity.

In this case, the naming happened 150 years ago and the living descendants are clearly still bringing the laundry in.
